麦克白打了胜仗立了功，在归途中遇到三个女巫，这三个女巫语言他会当上国王，但是他只能当一代，而同行班柯的世代子孙都是国王。麦克白回来与夫人讲了这件事情，于是趁国王在麦克白家做客的时候，杀死了邓肯国王，从而取而代之。一步错，步步错，接下来，他畏惧女巫的预言，杀了班柯，杀了麦克特夫的妻儿。最后，麦克白夫人精神失常自杀了，麦克白毫无悲伤之情，最后自己也被麦克特夫杀了。

其实，本书的结尾是讲人们推翻暴君的统治，重获自由，可是它之所以能称为悲剧是因为麦克白自身的悲剧。
原来麦克白是一位英勇善战的将军，在打完胜仗回国领奖时，在路上碰见了三个女巫。每个女巫都做了自己的预言，第一个女巫说：“你能当国王。”第二个女巫说：“你旁边的那个侍从的后代能当上国王。”最后一个女巫说：“不是由母亲生出来的人能打败你。”麦克白听后觉得很吃惊，于是回家把路上发生的事告诉了妻子。他的妻子是一个心狠手辣的人，听了麦克白说的话以后，怂恿他去刺杀国王。于是在妻子的引导、权力的引诱下，他杀了国王，并且逃脱了。
麦克白当上了国王，第一个预言实现了。接着，他又想起了第二个预言，于是他把那个随从杀了，可是却不小心让他的儿子跑了。在接下来的几年里，麦克白有时仿佛看见了国王和随从复活了，在跟人说话，经常神经质地自问自答，受着两新的折磨。
过了几年后，麦克白的随从的儿子长大了，而且在另外一个国家当国王，他想起了麦克白的杀父之仇，于是出兵打仗。此时麦克白的国家已被麦克白管理得一团糟，自然不是别人的对手，就在麦克白奄奄一息的时候，这是只有第三个预言支撑着他。随从的儿子创了进来，麦克白告诉他不可能杀了他，因为第三个预言，随从的儿子告诉他，他是剖腹产生的，麦克白的精神支柱倒了，随从的儿子当了国王。
